Lay Out the Towel! – A Guide to the Beaches of Portugal

0

Everyone loves the sun – it’s one of the main reasons why we travel from one side of the world to the another!  One of the focal points of the vacation is the beach. It’s the place where you can go for a swim, a jog, play some sports and enjoy other leisure activities, or just lay back and soak up some rays; and would it be fair to say that some of the best villas in Portugalare situated around the beach? Just imagine waking up to the sound of the sea, going out onto the balcony, and having breakfast to the view of the rising sun casting its reflection against the ocean.

Portugal boasts some of the best beaches in the world and is one country that can claim some of the best temperatures all year round thanks to it being the furthest west of Europe and also is the closest European country to the Atlantic Ocean.

There are various places in Portugal that have fantastic beaches, beyond just the big resorts on the Algarve:

Near Lisbon one of the popular destinations for Beaches is Costa da Caparica.  It is located south of the capital city and is a place locals go to. Caparica is a fishing village that means fish are caught and sold on the same day, there should be no surprise to see an abundance of fish restaurants.  Being close to the city you would think the water would be polluted but it isn’t, and it doesn’t get crowded like other beaches near Lisbon.

To the west of Lisbon, two areas that have attractive beaches are Estoril and Cascais. Both are on the Estoril coast and attract people from all over the world but mainly from Northern Europe.  The Regions are considered to be wealthy areas and in fact are ranked one of the most expensive places in Portugal.  In Estoril are some of the nicest villas in Portugal, one of Europe’s biggest Casino and a  motor sport circuit where race events such as Moto GP are held, and it previously was the race circuit for the Portuguese F1 Gran Prix. Cascais has a large Yacht harbour and has world famous Guincho Beach which featured in a James Bond movie.

The Beiras to the north of Lisbon in central Portugal has two beaches that are known for their enormous lagoons and beach dunes with Pine Forests in the background.  But it is not ideal for early morning or night swims because the water drops temperature very quickly.  Although the beaches there do have heavy waves  the beach will be good for experienced surfers who want a challenge.

In Costa Verde just like the other northern region beaches the water gets very cold even in the peak of summer although on some days the temperature can be normal even though if you going at the peak summer season then that might not be such a bad thing.  But it doesn’t mean their beaches are bad as they have got beautiful sand, great water sports activities and restaurants.

Algarve is a popular destination for tourists as it is well know for beaches. In Algarve the Albufeira Beaches are the main ones that many people consider the best.  There are lot of beaches in areas that can’t be accessed by foot and boats are needed to get to them. These are coves, grottos and caves that are isolated but will be the perfect place to be on your own or explore.

Praia da Marinha is one beach that is secluded from open eyes and is found in the middle of  Algrave.  Its location is key as its calm waters are ideal for snorkelling; also it has a backdrop of cliffs and due to its calming nature is a perfect spot for photographers.  Its reputation precedes it, as it was given the “Golden Beach”award.  Pictures of the beach are usually used when promoting Portugal and are often used by advertising agencies.

For those wondering what to do on a Beach, most have various activities in which cater to  all ages.  For the thrill seekers – you can hire jet skis or do some Water skiing, parasailing and wake boarding there also some beaches have power boat tours which will take you along the coastline.  A lot of the beaches have a beach store or bar where you can get a bite to eat or buy some equipment and souvenirs but for those who don’t care about activities can just take a book and lay back, bask in the tranquil atmosphere around you, without a worry in the world…

Guide to California Beaches

0

Despite the fact that more famous actors and actresses live in this state than any other, the beach, according to those polled, is the main reason why people travel to California. This is no surprise when you consider the fact that some of the most beautiful beaches in the world can be found on the coast line of California. One does not have to go far to find the sand and surf that they are looking for.

High Bluff beach is probably the most popular of all the beaches in California. Once a place where industry ruled, the High Bluff area is now one of the most breathtaking areas on the planet. The white sand beach is the place where thousands flock during the heat of summer to soak up the rays and swim in the cool ocean. Make sure you arrive early to avoid the rush or you may not be able to find a spot to lay the towel.

The Wilson Creek Beach is one of those spots that seems to attract the higher class of people. One of the playgrounds for the rich and famous from as far away as Los Angeles, the Wilson Creek beach offers some of the finest in views and sunbathing that one could hope for. The beach is alive in the summer months and is the site for a good many yearly festivals and events.

Enderts Beach is small but that is just fine with those that frequent it. One of the smallest in the state, Enderts allows for a more peaceful vacation when sunbathing and swimming. Surrounded by some of the more popular attractions in the state, this beach is a popular stop off on the way back to the motel place. Take part in the free snorkeling lessons that are given from May to August to enhance the experience.

The Crescent Beach is another smaller area but very popular. This site is one of the many in California where some feature films and television shows have been shot. The small area fills up fast in the heat of summer so plan on leaving early to get one of the prime spots.

Pebble Beach is probably the most well known of all beaches in California. Home to some of the finest swimming and relaxing areas in the world, Pebble Beach is also where you will find the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, a top stop on the masters and other professional golf tournaments.

Point St George is also highly popular with the rich and famous because of the seclusion of the site. There is no real easy access to the beach and people are often times put off by the long walk from parking to the beach. This does nothing to take away from the sight of the beach and the ocean as it crashes in.

Kellogg Beach is great for the occasional tourist. Small and out of the way this beach is one of the more beautiful but also one of the least known of all California beaches.

The Pelican State beach is a protected area that can be used for swimming and sunbathing as well. The area is home to the largest population of pelicans in the entire state and people from the world over come to feed the large birds with food bought from local vendors.

Beachfront Park is much more than just a beach. Surrounded by an uncommon wooded area, this beach is perfect for the family. The site does not get real busy during the year and can be perfect for that party or picnic you are planning.

South Beach is a nice little spot if you happen to enjoy crowds. One of the busiest of all the California beaches, South Beach is one of the many spots where you are likely to find a famous person or two out enjoying the sun and surf.

Memorial Park Beach is the one place where you can have great swimming, sunbathing and breathtaking views without all the noisy crowds. Attendance at this beach has been down in recent years and people are finding it much more enjoyable.
